Software Architect & Full-Stack Developer | Greek Community of Cairo (2026)
Executive Summary
Architected and executed the end-to-end programmatic modernization of the primary digital portal for the Greek Community of Cairo (EKK). Replaced a monolithic legacy portal encumbered by BeTheme (Muffin Builder), WPBakery, LayerSlider, and 17 obsolete plugins with a high-performance, Full Site Editing (FSE) block theme. Successfully migrated 4,870 historical posts and pages into native Gutenberg blocks with zero AST validation errors and zero manual content re-entry.
1. Context & Problem
- ->Client / Domain: Greek Community of Cairo / EKK (Community Organization & NGO)
- ->Timeline: 2026
- ->Project Role: Software Architect & Full-Stack Developer
//The Challenge
The portal accumulated over a decade of community records, event publications, and announcements (5,200+ posts and pages) structured within proprietary page-builder shortcodes and Muffin Builder metadata. The system suffered from significant database autoload bloat (~700KB per query), legacy PHP 7.4 runtime constraints, and obsolete caching drop-ins. The objective was to modernize the entire platform to native WordPress FSE and PHP 8.2 while preserving all historical archives and achieving superior performance without downtime.
2. Technical Stack & Architecture
- ->Runtime & Theme Architecture: PHP 8.2,
ekkairo-flagshipFull Site Editing (FSE) block theme, native Gutenberg Block API. - ->Data & Storage Tier: MySQL 8.0 with optimized autoloaded options, Redis in-memory persistent object cache.
- ->SEO & Metadata: Rank Math SEO with structured Greek organizational schema (
Ελληνική Κοινότητα Καΐρου). - ->Deployment & Automation: Standalone, deterministic Bash cutover deployment pipeline (
bin/deploy-production.sh) with atomic rollback safeguards. - ->Infrastructure: Nginx reverse proxy with TLS 1.3, OPcache byte-code caching, and media proxy streaming.
3. Architectural Decisions & Engineering Challenges
- ->Automated Muffin Builder & Shortcode AST Transformation:
Developed a modular content migration engine using
@wordpress/block-serialization-default-parserto parse and convert nested Muffin Builder sections, wraps, PDF embedders, buttons, and shortcodes into native core blocks (core/columns,core/heading,core/paragraph,core/image,core/button). Converted 4,870 posts and pages with 0 AST validation failures. - ->Deterministic Dual-Runtime Cutover Pipeline:
Engineered an autonomous cutover script (
bin/deploy-production.sh) that safely isolates legacy plugin deactivation and BeTheme removal under PHP 7.4 before bootstrapping the modern FSE theme and optimizations under PHP 8.2, eliminating runtime parse crashes during cutover. - ->Autoloaded Options & Database Bloat Elimination:
Purged orphaned options (
rs-templates,redux_builder_amp,revslider-addons,polylang_wpml_strings) and disabled autoloading on dozens of legacy plugin rows, significantly lowering memory consumption per PHP request. - ->Persistent Object Caching & Performance Tuning: Integrated Redis Object Cache and fine-tuned PHP 8.2 OPcache invalidation, reducing database roundtrips and delivering sub-200ms Time-to-First-Byte (TTFB).
- ->Zero-Downtime Media Virtualization: Implemented Nginx proxy-pass fallbacks to stream 50GB of production media assets on demand during local and staging development, eliminating massive local disk footprint requirements during migration staging.
4. Operational & Institutional Impact
- ->Seamless Migration: 4,870 historical posts and pages modernized to valid Gutenberg blocks with 0 data loss and 0 manual re-entry.
- ->Lean Plugin Footprint: Deactivated and eliminated 17 legacy plugins and proprietary page builders in favor of core block capabilities.
- ->Sub-Second Performance: Drastic reduction in TTFB and memory footprint with PHP 8.2 and Redis object caching.
- ->Modern Maintainability: Full institutional editorial governance powered by WordPress Full Site Editing block templates and clean Greek locale standards (
el_GR).
