Lead Software Architect & Full-Stack Developer | NileTech - 218TV (2016)
Overview
218TV is a prominent Libyan satellite television network and digital news broadcasting outlet. The network operated a massive, high-traffic news platform that suffered from severe undocumented legacy code, frequent architectural failures, and unmaintainable content sprawl. Contracted through NileTech, this project overhauled and stabilized 218TV's entire digital operation into a single, unified enterprise Drupal system.
Served as Lead Software Architect and Full-Stack Developer on the migration. Applied the Strangler-Fig architectural pattern to methodically deconstruct the legacy codebase, migrating fragmented data tables, editorial workflows, and frontend templates into Drupal iteratively until full consolidation into a single, reliable entry point was achieved.
Key Technical Challenges & Architecture
//1. Strangler-Fig Legacy Migration
Confronted with an undocumented, monolithic codebase that could not be shut down without interrupting active broadcast news cycles, systematically intercepted traffic and dissected legacy modules piece by piece. Extracted database taxonomies, video metadata, and historical article archives into Drupal entity structures while keeping the live newsroom operational.
//2. Custom Drupal Module Engineering & Unified Content Hub
Engineered custom Drupal modules to handle live broadcast schedules, video-on-demand (VOD) asset management, breaking news tickers, and editorial content governance under a single administrative umbrella.
//3. High-Traffic Caching & Concurrency Optimization
Designed a multi-tier caching strategy integrating Drupal render caching, Varnish reverse-proxy rules, and MySQL query optimization. This decoupled database reads during major national breaking news events, ensuring sustained high throughput and sub-second page delivery across desktop and mobile devices.
